Vacation and Corona – Which insurances are useful

The pandemic still has a major impact on holiday planning. This was the result of a representative survey commissioned by HanseMerkur Versicherung. According to the study, although the desire to travel is great, almost half of those surveyed are afraid of not being able to travel because of the pandemic.

Almost 70 percent of those surveyed stated that they paid attention to flexible travel conditions when booking. In addition, some supplementary travel insurance can offer security.

Different benefits of travel cancellation insurance

Anyone who cannot or does not want to go on a booked vacation because of Corona can partially insure themselves. However, travel cancellation insurance does not pay in all cases. It is worth reading the conditions carefully. Because depending on the provider, different services apply, for example in the case of a quarantine or the question of whether a positive PCR test is required as proof or a medical certificate.

In most cases, an insured event must have two points:

  • An event must be so serious that a trip cannot be expected.
  • An event must occur unexpectedly.

The problem: It is often disputed what “serious” and “unexpected” means. The insurance conditions are usually not clearly formulated.

Fear of Corona is not a reason for resignation

An illness with Covid-19 is undisputedly serious. However, Corona is a pandemic and some travel cancellation insurance companies do not pay in the event of a pandemic or they make restrictions, as the Stiftung Warentest has found. Anyone who is only afraid of the corona virus will get nothing from travel cancellation insurance.

In general: Stiftung Warentest does not consider travel cancellation insurance to be absolutely necessary. In her opinion, a degree can be worthwhile, especially for expensive trips or for families with small children and senior citizens. According to the testers, however, an annual contract is often cheaper than an extra policy for each trip.

Stiftung Warentest: combine travel cancellation and travel interruption insurance

When booking a trip, several insurance policies are usually offered at the same time. But consumer advocates advise taking out travel cancellation insurance separately. So there are usually better conditions and a cheaper price. The Geld-Ratgeber Finanztip points out that insurance can be purchased up to 30 days before the start of the trip. After that, you can only do this on the day you book your trip.

Stiftung Warentest still advises combining travel cancellation insurance with a travel interruption policy. An early journey home in particular can be expensive. In principle, the testers advise against paying a deductible because, in their opinion, it doesn’t pay off.

No last minute cancellations for Flex fares

In addition to travel cancellation insurance, there are also so-called flex tariffs that people who want to travel can use to protect themselves. They are often offered directly at the time of booking. With the Flex fares, it is possible to rebook or cancel the trip up to a specific date for a surcharge. What you should pay attention to: This flexibility is often only available up to 14 days before the start of the trip, sometimes even only up to 29 days before.

International health insurance generally makes sense

Experts, on the other hand, advised international health insurance even before Corona: Even if the statutory health insurance companies cover a lot within the EU, they do not cover everything – for example, not the return transport to Germany. And because it can quickly run into the tens of thousands, the 10 to 20 euros per year for international health insurance are actually a bargain.
